"My mission is to prove that these images don't just belong on your television screen during Halloween, but it should also be acceptable to display them on your wall, all year round."
My art consists primarily of macabre and creepy images, or what's referred to as "dark art." I explore the idea of a narrative portrayal, with believably realistic characters, in a slightly unsettling realm. I paint people I know, places I've explored and animals that have crossed my path. With the horror film genre in the forefront of mainstream cinema and television, I often wonder why horror and the dark arts are not more widely accepted. My mission is to prove that these images don't just belong on your television screen during Halloween, but it should also be acceptable to display them on your wall, all year round.
I work in a wide range of mediums and techniques. For my paintings, I primarily work in oil. I've been a pen and ink artist for as long as I can remember, as well. My sculptural process starts with clay, then molded in silicone and finally, cast in resin. Other work I've done includes special effects makeup for films and my horror photography, writing and screenplays, production design in filmmaking, set design in theatrical productions and fine art photography.
My current body of work (paintings) consists of art that belongs to a larger series, which will be released in 2018, concentrating on Superstitions of different cultures.
Shane Izykowski, born Oh Jin Kwon in Taegu, South Korea, was adopted at the age of two. Living in Northeastern Pennsylvania for most of his life, Shane has dabbled in many different mediums and art forms. He is mostly self taught, and has spent a great deal of time experimenting with music, painting, drawing, 3D and interactive sculpture, special effects and makeup, filmmaking and directing, writing poetry and scripts, costuming, mural work and photography. He's owned his own photography business, was the Art Director for a community art gallery for two years, founded Project Street Art in 2014 and won awards for short films and community service. He's also been featured on Regis and Kelly Live for his Halloween costume in 2006, and The Today Show in 2007. He's been nominated in his field as a Silver Award Winner for Best Wedding Photographer in the Poconos in 2013, and Top 40 Under 40 by the Pocono Record in 2013 for outstanding leadership. He also won a second place award for the music video "Icarus" by Edelweiss in Philadelphia in 2014.
In 2015, Shane and his partner Sonia Leticia (www.sonialeticia.com) drove over 3,000 miles to San Francisco, CA, where they now live and work. Shane works during the day as a museum preparator at the San Francisco International Airport Museum, the only accredited art museum in an airport nationally. In September of 2015, Shane was accepted into the Artspan Residency Program, which allowed 20+ Bay Area artists to have low cost studio space to create their personal work. Shane's studio is located within a few city blocks from Twitter, Square, Uber, and Dolby. His new body of work since beginning the residency has been a definitive collection of past experience, new challenges and personal growth.
Currently, you can find Shane at art events, eating the diverse cultural food that San Francisco has to offer, or at his studio at 1540 Market Street, SF.
